Last night, at the BDO World Championship Quarter-Final between Holland's Jan Dekker and Gerry Thompson at the break it was 3-1. And Bobby George said that Jan Dekker would have no chance of fighting back against Gerry Thompson as Jan had missed doubles and his scoring was quite low as he wasn't hitting the trebles.
But it turned around as Jan Dekker started to hit the doubles and the trebles but Gerry Thompson started to miss he seemed to be sweating quite a lot and looked ill. It was 4-2 to Gerry Thompson, Jan Dekker made it 4-3. But his nickname 'Mr Cool' proved well as he won 5-4.
I get annoyed when sporting presenters like Bobby George, John Virgo, John McCririck dismiss people's chances as in snooker and darts it is not over until the last dart has been thrown into the double or the last pot has made the match safe. With McCririck he dismisses horses who don't have much of a chance. The famous example of a outsider winning in the 21st century is Mon Mome who won the 2009 Grand National at 100-1. Also at the 2010 Nunthrope Stakes at York, Sole Power won at 100-1. And Foinvon in the 1967 Grand National who has a fence named after him.
In Snooker, Shaun Murphy and Joe Johnson both the World Championship as outsiders. 1986- Joe Johnson 2005- Shaun Murphy.
In Darts. Bobby George should know that the favourite doesn't always win. But he is always been at the BDO and is a character. Get well soon, Tony Green, the voice of BBC Darts for many years. Hope to see him commentating again in 2012.
